Call takers are trained to gather specific information to best determine the nature of the problem and its seriousness. This requires them to ask lots of questions, some of which may seem redundant or information you might assume we know. In the interest of safety for citizens and officers who would be affected, it is critical that the call taker gathers as much information as possible. Rest assured, on emergency calls, the officer is most often already en-route to the scene while the 911 operator is still gathering facts. The clicking of the keyboard is a common background sound heard by callers as the operator enters the information into the computer aided dispatch database. This allows the dispatcher to radio the information the call taker is entering to the responding officers, in some cases almost simultaneously.Police Department
